Bread and Circuses

Artist: Amanda Mehl

SOLO SHOW ZAZ10TS GALLERY
December 15, 2022 - March 2, 2023
10 TIMES SQUARE | 1441 Broadway, New York, NY 10018

The exhibition Bread and Circuses features Mehl’s most ambitious work to date, There is no “I” in Team. It is both a political satire and conceptual fashion film that Mehl directed, shot, edited, animated and acted in herself while isolating with a camera and a green screen in her living room at the beginning of the pandemic. Mehl plays approximately 50 characters all dressed in Amehl. The theme is a national championship in her fictional country Amehlica. Throughout the film, she uses the sporting competition as a metaphor for capitalism and the trophy represents the American Dream. The film will be shown in conjunction with a mixed media sculpture installation and performance art.

In conjunction with the film, the exhibition features installations of trophies, flags, and relics that portray Amehlican nationalist propaganda. Common threads uniting the various works are the glorification of overworking, competition, a populist leader’s manipulative sensationalism of national events, pride, “greatness”, commercialization, and mass media corporate sponsorship.

Inventive Designer Secures Times Square Exposure | By ROSEMARY FEITELBERG | January 20, 2023
The interdisciplinary artist Amanda Mehl is drawing attention to the direct-to-consumer label Mehl.

Many designers toil away for years in order to afford Times Square advertising but the little-known label Amehl is making a splash there in an unusual way.

The opportunity came about through the curator and philanthropist Tzili Charney, chairman of the real estate business L.H. Charney Associates, who Mehl met a few years ago.

On Thursday night, Amehl will be staging a fashion show at Times Square that is being billed as the inauguration of the Amehl Semiannual National Spirit Games. The two-hour event will include guest speakers and performances, serving as a substitute for New York Fashion Week" -- WWD (Women's Wear Daily)
