Return to sender: refugees, displaced, relocated, politics, wars, immigrants

“While creating these works, I thought about my Italian grandmother, who lost our family in the holocaust, my Moroccan grandmother, who didn't want to leave her life, and myself, an immigrant in USA in 2023”. — Karin Bar

The American dream is not for everyone. Some don't have the privilege to dream of it.

PROJECT: This is my Love letter to New York

January 3 - 31, 2022 | ZAZ CORNER “IN BETWEEN”
10 Times Square Billboard, South East Corner of 41st Street and 7th Avenue

During quarantine, Karin’s serenity and inspiration came from walking and shooting the streets of New York. From all the people, streets, grid, buzz, and sense of internal hope that the city gave her. She created multimedia collages titled: This is my Love Letter to New York.

"These collages were created between 2020-2021 to capture what the city does to you—how afterward, you are never the same. She is never the same, but it still feels like a familiar place—like home.

My collages are about creating new realities where photos are my colors and brushes as I paint new worlds based on my perspective. Motion allowed me to tell a fascinating short story of the world I'm creating through the exploration of animation. In this series of works, words—specifically ‘pleasure’ and ‘no vacancy’—play a big part in telling the story of the migration from and to the city. It encapsulates the wave of new, youthful energy around diversity and change. “ " - Karin Bar
